Dressing up- Now that’s where half the fun of Halloween lies. You can choose to throw just a costume party, or maybe it’s something specific, like ‘Come as your favourite children’s movie character’.

Decor is a huge part of a successful Halloween party. Pumpkin lamps, creepy crawlies, fake cobwebs, candles will all add to the atmosphere and give your party that Halloween flair.

While you’re on the decor, it might be fun to leave a few props around too. Stuff like masks, wigs, fake fangs, capes, different kinds of hats, and let your guests get creative. These are an added level of fun for your guests and will probably provide you with some great photo-opportunities as well.

Speaking of photo-ops, try setting up a simple ‘photo-booth’ with a camera and a few different Halloween-themed backdrops. The costumes, the camaraderie and a few drinks are all it will take for people to really get into it. Look forward to some creative, crazy photos!

Make sure the drinks you’re serving stick with the Halloween theme. If there’s a punch bowl, try and add some food colouring to make it a spooky blood-red or ‘radiation green’. Strew some dry ice around for the added misty, creepy effect.

You do not want to run out of alcohol. Ever. Sure Halloween is all about fright, but do you want to scare your guests to death?

For food, besides the usual pumpkin-flavoured standards, try your hand at a few gory, ghoulish menu items. red velvet cake balls covered in white frosting decorated to look like eyeballs, or dumplings shaped like brains! Let your imagination go wild, Halloween is one time of the year when it’s OK to go over-the-top.

The music too had better be keeping with the mood. Make a playlist of your favourite scare tracks like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. For bonus kicks, throw in a few spooky sound effects in between songs. Thunder, howling wolves, screams, ghostly moans. Hey, it is Halloween after all!

If your party is a smaller cozier gathering, you might want to consider gathering around the TV set, to catch a few movies. Stick with the classic horror films, like The Exorcist or pick a happy, feel-good Halloween themed movie, think The Addams Family. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Last but not the least, if you’re up to it, rig up a scary surprise for your guests. A motion-activated ghost on wheels, perhaps? You can find DIY instructions for stuff like this available online, or you could just buy one ready-made…

But what fun is that?

Follow these guidelines to throw the most epic Halloween party and rest assured knowing your guests will have the chilling-est time ever!
