But for merrymakers, it?s the island?s infamous all-night Full Moon Party that?s the major attraction. Head to Haad Rin beach on the island?s southern tip and join more than 30,000 revellers living it up under the moonlight. Often a rite of passage for young backpackers travelling through the region, the monthly party draws the crowd with cheap drinks, beachside grilled BBQ snacks, thumping music that ranges from hip-hop and trance to reggae, and a trippy atmosphere complete with fire dancers and neon-painted party people. Sounds like your scene? Check this year?s Full Moon Party dates then hop on a 25-minute speedboat from Ko Samui to Haad Rin beach. 2. Mardi Gras, New Orleans, USA

The occasion originated to mark the beginning of Lent, and revellers take to the street to join in a celebration of fetes and parades before Ash Wednesday. Expect sumptuously themed floats, elaborately costumed actors (and revellers), a festoon of beads and trinkets thrown out to parade-goers, and an all-round, over-the-top celebration of pomp and colour. 3. Carnival, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Celebrations are held throughout the country, but head to Rio for the biggest, flashiest party. It draws over a million visitors, who flock to the capital city for this spectacular extravaganza of costumes, dance and fun. The highlight of Carnival is the Samba Parade, where top samba schools from Brazil and abroad participate in a fierce competition of costumes and floats. It doesn?t matter if you have two left feet, the electrifying atmosphere will sweep you up and you?ll soon be dancing to the samba beat. 4. Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong
