Themed restaurants are fun places to visit with both friends and family, and these places generally focus more or maintaining a certain ambiance and décor that makes them stand out from the competition. Good theme restaurants, however, will take care to serve good food and drinks as well, not just blowing the trumpet of Oh look at our theme! We have listed some of the best theme restaurants in Kolkata, which also score high marks in the cuisine and service departments.
Machaan (Theme: Jungle)

Despite being superbly crowded on frantic days, Machaan does really well to maintain its unique jungle theme throughout the course of your meal. The décor is exemplified by the cool tree hourse in the centre of the restaurant and accentuated by the artificial monkeys and birds that dot the ceilings and branches. The cuisine is mostly North India and Mughlai, with some favourites such as Chaamp Ka Salan (slow braised Lamb chops) and Nariyal Mirch Aloo (stir-fried potatoes in coconut and curry leaves). The bar menu features all your standard whiskies and other hard liquors. If you plan on visiting with a large group, call in and enquire about their buffet offers.

When it comes to themes for a restaurant, Kaidi Kitchen takes full marks for originality. Designed to resemble a prison, the restaurant has tables that are placed in jail cells, which surely makes for a very romantic ambiance. The staff also add to the restaurant's theme by dressing as jailors and inmates. In terms of food, they are one of Kolkata's many vegetarian only restaurants, and feature some excellent Indian and continental fare. Some must-try dishes are the Shaam Savera Kofta and the cheese fondue. Definitely book a table if you plan on visiting as the place is extremely popular.

The opulent north-India décor and superb lighting perfectly complement the authentic art fixtures and classic wooden furniture. Everything about this place oozes class and elegance. The cuisine, as you would expect, is traditional North Indian and Mughlai fare, with extravagant dishes such as the Galawati kebab and Mutton Raan Biriyani taking centre stage. Even their desserts steal the show, especially the Gajar ka Halwa and Shahi Tukda, which will leave you wishing for another bite.
