New Year in the Modern Village of Hauz Khas
The moment you enter Hauz Khas village, it’s apparent that the buildings have been standing there for longer than we can imagine. The village itself traces back to the 13th century reign of Delhi Sultanate and therefore houses traditional structures from that time - a water tank, an Islamic seminary and a mosque. In fact, the name ‘Hauz Khas’ finds it etymology in the Farsi words ‘Hauz’ meaning ‘water tank’ and ‘Khas’ meaning ‘royal’, roughly translating to ‘the royal water tank’.
Over the years, the area has seen the upper crust of many generations set up housing in the area. It is one of the most ‘luxurious’ and expensive, yet beautiful and well preserved area in the city. Just imagine! Unwinding there after along hard week of work, along with may be a peg of Black Dog scotch whisky .
Over the past 5 years, there has been an exponential development in terms of restaurants and party places. It is now one of the most popular areas where you will find youngsters hanging out at the fort all day and later catching a bite to eat.
What attracts people to Hauz Khas village like a moth to a flame? Is it the plethora of luxurious restaurants that leave you spoilt for choice or is there more to this story? Old world charm and the beautiful surroundings more than contribute to the ever pouring crowd in the Village. It is rare that you can enjoy the peace of being in the midst of nature while enjoying the gastronomical delights of the modern world with your friends and family.
Hauz Khas Village makes up the perfect location to spend your New Year. There is a little something for everyone in this area and here’s how one can spend their time there:
(A) Hauz Khas Fort
The Hauz Khas fort is legendary. It not only sprawls across a huge area but also brings you hours of joy as you discover every nook and crevice of the fort. While it is only open till early evening, people enjoy chilling here with a guitar, a book or just with the beauty surrounding them. Not only that, it has also become one of the most popular shooting and picture spots of the city. The sunset seen from the fort is magnificent. People often start their New Year Eve celebration by seeing the Sun go down over the lake.
(B) Shopping for Fusionwear
The wedding season in Delhi lasts for 3 months - December, January and February. To fill that gap when they’re out of the fort and not yet ready to start the party, people loiter in the village area and shop for fusion wear outfits. Hauz Khas Village is home to a number of niche shops which sell high end fusion wear for men and women. Men, who feel that they don’t have enough choice to reinvent their wardrobe for the wedding season, should definitely visit these shops at least once.
(C) The Party Scene at Hauz Khas
Once you’ve had your fill of shopping, it’s time to begin the party. If you’re more of a relaxing dinner kind of a person then the best place for you is Amour Restaurant which has a magical rooftop setting perfect for a family outing or to take your better half for a quiet evening. The food is amazing, the wine delicious and the music soothing. If, however, you like to spend time lounging over a couple of drinks, then the perfect place for you to go are Raasta, Fork You and the newly opened but immensely popular Social Offline. If you’re a complete party person who can’t wait to dance their shoes off, then you must visit Mia Bella & Out of the Box.
