Movies and television shows thrive on connecting with audiences on an emotional level. Unsurprisingly, more often than not you will find yourself getting barraged by the hackneyed tales of an unrequited love, syrupy reunions of long-lost family members, or grotesque superhero sagas. However, rarely does a duo get its due. The bromantic cutaways serve as a welcome relief after long-winded maudlin moments. Celebrate the spirit of Asli Yaari, let’s take a look at some of the most iconic duos that have been a saving grace with their rib-tickling humour and buffoonery.
Will Smith and Carlton Banks
Besides the fact that they are both black teenage boys, these two have almost nothing in common. One is a short, nerdy overachieving College student and the other is a tall, laidback, womanizing Ghetto boy. Together, the two of them have formed one of the most unforgettable TV friendships, perfectly complementing each other with their crazy escapades and family-friendly humour. Black TV comedies still use their example as a benchmark today.
Tom and Jerry
These two will always be remembered as iconic cartoon characters that have found a place in everyone’s heart. Tom’s incessant pursuit of Jerry is as adorable as Jerry’s constant outwitting of any of Tom’s hare-brained schemes. Probably the best example of “Frenemies” we have on this list, this crazy duo have been entertaining kids and adults alike for over 60 years and never has any animated anthropomorphic duo yet come close to imitating their unmatched charm.
Jai & Veeru
Easily one of Bollywood’s most iconic duos, the camaraderie between Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra as the portrayed Jai and Veeru in the now cult film “Sholay” is the stuff of cinema legend. Veeru’s flippant humour and happy-go-lucky was a refreshing contrast to the Jai’s stiff, sombre demeanour, making for some classic desi-style banter. Fans will forever remember how the two of them work together to depose the local bandit Gabbar Singh and bring an end to the tyrannical acts that terrorised the townspeople.
Chandler Bing & Joey Tribbiani
When you are part of a show that features an ensemble cast of six iconic TV characters, it really is a great feat to stand out as a duo. Ask any Friends fan who their favourite characters are and chances are they will choose Chandler and Joey without hesitation. Chandler’s sarcastic wit and awkward social skill were such a stark contrast with Joey’s loving and dull-witted nature and womanizing traits that their relationship threw up a gamut of crazy scenarios perfect for TV viewing.
Walter White & Jesse Pinkman
Many TV viewers consider Breaking Bad as one of the greatest TV dramas of all time. Whether this is true or not can be up for debate; what is without doubt, however, is that the enigmatic duo of Walter and Jesse have craved their names into the annals of TV history as one of the most narratively riveting and emotionally tantalizing friendships portrayed on the small screen. Walter White’s unconventional anti-hero character plays perfectly well with the Meth-addled, teenage-angst-riddled character of Jesse Pinkman, making for countless memorable TV moments that will surely be watched over and over for years to come.
Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee
For a 13-Oscar winning movie trilogy inspired by a cult epic novel series, The Lord of the Rings has one of the most timid lead characters ever. Not many remember that Samwise was actually Frodo’s gardener; this peculiar cirsumstance never came in the way of their surprisingly close relationship. Frodo’s fondness for Sam’s simple and loving nature is only surpassed by Sam’s admiration of Frodo’s inspirational courage. Their friendship can be best summarized by the iconic scene where Sam’s timely return saves Frodo from being devoured by the giant spider Shelob.
Amar and Prem
Rajkumar Santoshi gave a cult classic to Indian cinema in the form of “Andaz Apna Apna,” a box-office hit that gave us some of Bollywood’s most lovable characters, the quirky and neurotic duo of Amar and Prem, played by Amir Khan and Salman Khan. The movie proved to be hit among the masses, and the dialogues and scenes delivered were not only hilarious but paved the path for modern-day “bromances” in Indian cinema. The movie will forever be remembered for the unique chemistry that these two superstars shared.
Timon and Pumbaa
Legend has it that the meerkat Timon met Pumbaa, the large warthog from the Savannah’s while digging tunnels and the rest is history. This epic duo has ruled the hearts of millions of The Lion King fans with their rick-rolling humour, quick-witted antics, and their strong sense of belonging. Timon is savvy, inquisitive, and always full of ideas, while Pumbaa is firm, jolly, and a happy-go-lucky creature who believes in enjoying the present. Their camaraderie in the first two Lion King with the lovable Simba movies was so well received that they even got their own spin-off movie.
Harry Christmas and Lloyd Dunne aka “Dumb and Dumber”
I must shake the hand of the man that came up with the idea of putting together two of America funniest men in a slapstick comedy movie featuring the exploits of two certifiably idiotic morons. Dumb and Dumber crazy adventure to return a briefcase full of money to its rightful owner is fondly remembered for the memorable performances of Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels, whose simpleton personalities lead to a multitude of easily avoidable misadventures that make for some super-funny capers.
Harold and Kumar
You know someone is your true best friend when they agree to go with you on a quest to find White Castle burgers. The two chronic stoners share epic adventures where they encounter some choice characters including a racoon with an attitude, racist police, an escaped cheetah, extreme sport punks, and most memorably, an epic Neil Patrick Harris. Although the movies are nowhere near what most would consider classics, they will always be remembered for Harold and Kumar’s outlandish and bizarre experiences.
