He is the Shahenshah of Bollywood, loved and respected by millions. But talk about his friends and he smiles, “I don’t have many friends.”
True, though adored by the nation and having the highest regard in tinsel town, megastar Amitabh Bachchan just have a handful of close friends. And the one name that stands tall in that list is that of Indian business magnate - Anil Ambani.
The bond between the Reliance Group chairman and our Big B has been more of respect, laced with unadulterated love and fondness for each other. While Mr. Bachchan considers Anil Ambani as one of his close confidante, Anil reciprocates the same feeling by calling him ‘Da’ and seeking his guidance in every walk of life.
Be it any occasion whether a wedding, birthday celebration or any festival… the festivities for both these friends are incomplete sans each other’s presence. Amitabh Bachchan is present at all Anil’s soirees, most of which are often hosted for his dear friend Amitabh only, and similarly Anil ensures that he along with his wife is there at all the Bachchan gatherings , which are restricted only for few family friends.
In 2000, when Amitabh Bachchan was going through major financial crisis, it was Amar Singh, Subarta Roy and Anil Ambani, who stood by him and gave him moral support and strength. “They supported me and were my strength,” Bachchan had quoted. Through the course of time the friendship between Amar Singh and Bachchan soured, even Subarat Roy drifted away… but the Anil - Amitabh bond continued to become stronger.
Anil has always stood by his ‘Da’, and what really appeals to him is - Big B’s loving nature and respect that he bestows upon his elders. Anil mentioned in a blog that he wrote on Mr. Bachchan’s 70th birthday – “There is one special aspect of his loving nature that I have to talk about. Da’s love for his respected parents, Babuji and Ma — and the respect he has always shown to his elders. I regard it as one of my life’s great privileges to have been at Da’s side, when he was nursing respected Babuji and Ma through their long periods of illness. I have personally seen the endless hours of patient care and rare and undying love that Da bestowed upon his parents — even as he coped with his very personal grief and sorrow. And, I have had the rare privilege, when Da’s time with the two people he loved and respected most in his life came to an end: to be at his side; to stand shoulder to shoulder with him on their final journey; and to bid the last farewell at our holy shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath. (sic)”
Anil’s closeness to the legend of Bollywood is obvious in the blog he wrote. The duo certainly share a karmic connection of sorts. “I adore him and all I know and care about is that. Coming out from nowhere, I have had the privilege of being there in every special moment of Da’s life, for the past more than 30 years — that is, for more than half my life,” said Anil Ambani, who had even hosted a grand party for Amitabh Bachchan’s 70th birthday inviting more than 1000 people.
While Mr. Bachchan is known to be an extremely private person, who allows only few people in his close knit family, the fact that Anil Ambani has been with him through all phases of life says a lot about their friendship. A man of few words, Amitabh has often quoted, “Anil is family”, but his actions definitely speak louder than his words. Every time Amitabh meets Anil’s mother he addresses her as ‘Mummy’ and touches her feet to take her blessing.
Not much is spoken about their friendship, but the Anil – Amitabh solidarity is certainly one of those rare ones, which does not need eloquent words to glorify it.
