The reticent action hero of Bollywood - Ajay Devgn may not have too many friends in the industry, however, the Drishyam star holds on to his little circle of friends very dearly. And the one name that tops this list is that of his friend — Sanjay Dutt. The duo has not only shared a warm relationship on-screen in several films like Raju Chacha, Tango Charlie, All The Best: Fun Begins, Rascals, Son Of Sardaar etc, but their fondness for each other transcends off-screen in their personal spaces as well.
Sanjay and Ajay’s camaraderie dates back to the time when Ajay was yet to begin his journey in filmdom, and Sanju Baba, as Ajay loving calls him, ever since has played the role of an elder brother and guided the young Devgn. “More than a friend, Ajay is like my brother,” the Khalnayak has announced it on more than one occasion. In fact, Sanjay even considers himself lucky to be one of those few people who knows the impish side of the usually coy Ajay, “Raju (Ajay’s pet name, which only a few people know of) gets comfortable with only a few people and I am a lucky guy to be his brother. And believe me, he is not at all serious as he appears to be. I have seen him in his other elements. He is funny, extremely witty; he can come up with crazy one-liners instantaneously. He is a fun guy to be around.” Only asli yaars know the ‘real’ you and, of course, address you by your pet names.
This true bond of friendship between Dutt and Devgn has only grown stronger with each passing year. People close to them claim that they are thick as knives and are always there for each other. When Ajay Devgn ventured into film production with Raju Chacha, the Rocky star went out of his way to make himself available for Devgn's film. Likewise, Ajay did not even ask for the script or discussed his fee when Sanjay approached him to do a part in his home production — Rascals.
“Sanju and I are more than friends, we are like brothers. If I ask Sanju to do a film, he will not question me. If Sanju asks me to do a film, I will not question him. There are no favors or paybacks in my relationship with Sanju,” says Ajay without any hesitation. “If either of us feels that the film won’t work, we will tell the other person so.” Being honest and just doing almost anything for each other, without any hesitation is indeed a sign of asli yaari.
Moreover, what makes Ajay-Sanjay’s friendship special is the immense amount of trust and faith they have in each other. “If someone comes to me and says Ajay did this or Ajay said this, I will never believe them because I trust my friend,” says Sanjay. “We immediately call each other up to clarify things. There can never be any misunderstanding between us,” adds his Singham friend.
The duo has always loved hanging out together, be it at house parties, or catching up over drinks, or going out for drives, however, with Sanjay Dutt now serving a five years sentence at Pune’s Yerwada jail after he was convicted for illegal possession of weapons in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, the best friends are separated. Needless to say, the Action Jackson star is missing his buddy very much and is hoping for him to return soon. On Sanjay Dutt’s birthday recently, Ajay wished Sanjay on twitter with a heartwarming message - "A very happy birthday to my elder brother, waiting for you to come."
Despite the distance, the two friends have stayed in touch through the period of Sanjay's incarceration. In fact, the duo even exchanges hand-written letters to each other. Last year, Sanju wrote a long letter to Ajay wishing him success for his film Singham Returns, which almost brought tears to his macho friend’s eyes. Ajay on the other hand, makes it a point to send personal messages to Sanju in jail either through Manyatta or other common friends.
A friendship that stands the test of time and gives strength during a rough patch is indeed to be cherished forever. Raising a toast to Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt’s asli yaari.
