Seldom does one come across a camaraderie that has lasted for over twenty years, especially in Bollywood it is a rare phenomenon. However, Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty’s association dates back to early 90s and is still going strong.
Interestingly, both kick-started their respective career with the film- ‘Phool Aur Kaante’, while Ajay Devgn starred as the main lead of the film, Rohit Shetty was the assistant director. They hit it off instantly and ever since then these two action addicts have maintained a warm and affectionate relationship. Connecting over movies was obvious, given the fact that both have been always passionate about cinema, but the real bonding happened over ‘action sequences’! With their fathers being renowned action directors – Veeru Devgan and M. B Shetty, Ajay and Rohit’s love for action does not come as a surprise and in fact it played an important role in getting them together. As the two would spend hours together chatting, discussing different stunts, never done before action sequences, and how to execute them on screen (they continue to do that even today).
As Ajay built his space as an action hero in the film industry, he ensured that his dear friend – Rohit was associated with most of his projects. Rohit worked as an assistant/associate/stunt director in Ajay’s films like ‘Suhaag’, ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’, ‘Hindustan Ki Kasam’, ‘Raju Chacha’ and ‘Haqeeqat’.
The bonding became strong with time and when finally Rohit decided to make his first film – ‘Zameen’, it was obvious that Ajay Devgn starred in the lead role. So comfortable are they in each other’s company that all Rohit’s film thereafter starred Ajay Devgn and their actor-director pairing rocked the box-office figures, as they delivered one hit after the other. Both basked in the glory of success and their friendship flourished.
All was well until Rohit decided to do ‘Chennai Express’ with Shah Rukh Khan. The buzz it that decision sparked off an animosity between the two ‘dosts’, but real friends don’t keep grudges for too long. The action kings of Bollywood, forgot their differences and reunited for ‘Singham Returns’ this year.
“We are friends. When ‘Chennai Express’ was offered to Rohit, he called me asking what to do. So I said him to do it and if he does a big project, then I am happy for him. People assumed that I was upset with him but I don’t know where that story came from,” said Ajay at a press conference, rubbishing all rumors about differences between the two.
Having worked together for more than 20 years, Ajay is more than a friend to Rohit as he said, “Ajay is my family; he is like my elder brother, who I know will be there for me at any given point.”
Both known to be introverts have never gone overboard singing praises for each other or narrating tall tales of their friendships. However, the warmth in their relationship is there for all to see. Now this is what we call ‘asli yaari.’
