The 21st Century Hobbies
What a dreary world we live in! With work and deadlines adding to your stress levels, city slickers desperately need to unwind. However there is only so much unwinding a movie or a night out drinking can achieve. In fact, our routines tend to get monotonous and its time we ventured out and found something that not only helps distress but that you enjoy doing.
Move over piano lessons and painting classes, it’s time to take a walk on the wild side and really challenge yourself and learn a new skill.
These are some of the things we had in mind:
Thanks to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy everyone has fantasies of Sailing in search of hidden treasures. The treasure is doubtful but the learning how to sail part is very doable. Of course it’s hard to find classes like these in landlocked cities but coastal cities, Mumbai being the best example, have plenty of classes which teach you how to sail.
There is nothing more relaxing that enjoying the open sea away from everything and of course marooning the boat on your own. In fact, it’s become such an exciting sport and hobby for so many that there are now even special classes dedicated to teaching children how to sail. All Aboard Matey! The Bombay Sailing Association provides many such sailing programmes.
There are dance forms and then there are dance forms. If you thought salsa was exotic and sexy, meet the king of seduction – The Argentine Tango. The streets of Buenos Aires is filled with couples romantically entwined dancing at every corner. It’s a dance which unlike others isn’t very easy to pick up but when you do get the hang of it, it will change the way you perceive dance. Its focus is on the leg work so in fact not only do you learn a great skill but earn a fantastic lower body work out.The Argentine tango is very different from the standard ballroom tango we are more exposed to but incredibly sexy in its own understated way. With popular Latin dances like Cha Cha Jive and even salsa over shadowing it, the argentine tango is still relatively unknown but gaining popularity in cities like Mumbai and Delhi. It takes a skilled individual to teach it as its one dance that cannot be learnt of a DVD. tangoIndia.in offers classes in cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pondicherry and Goa.
Golf is one sport that has people with completely opposite views about. Either they think it's beyond boring and slow or then they are golf addicts who just can't seem to get enough. This is considered to be a prestigious game and what people perceive as slow is that it requires a tremendous set of not just skill but patience. It's amazing but a lot of people swear by the sport saying it's not only engaging when you play but extremely relaxing as well.
Golf has become a serious sport and there are many golf courses in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. The Royal Palms in Mumbai is a splendid golf course but apart from that has various training and coaching programmes as well.
