From Prince William and Kate’s royal wedding to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s Italian extravaganza, we could draw up a long list of the world’s most glamorous weddings. Indian tycoons like Lakshmi Mittal and the GVK Reddy family have spent millions on hosting memorable weddings too. Then there’s the Bachchan wedding — we refer to Abhishek and Aishwarya of course — and other celebrations that were just as glamorous because of the sheer star power involved.
Be it a big fat Indian wedding or a jaw-dropping Hollywood jamboree, there are some ingredients that always add up to making marriage celebrations memorable. Taking inspiration from the world’s most glamorous weddings, here is a checklist of the top 5 elements required to ensure you’ll have an equally enchanting wedding!
IT ALL BEGINS WITH AN INVITATION
Once all the details are worked out, it is time to tell your near and dear ones to save the date. A wedding invitation gives your guests their first impression of what to expect from your nuptials, so this is of particular significance. Opt for a monogrammed and classic invitation like Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan did when they tied the knot in 2007. There’s no right or wrong way to do this: Mallika Reddy’s wedding invitation came in a brass box with Lord Balaji taking pride of place up front and centre. Soha Ali Khan, Lara Dutta and Salman Khan’s sister Arpita all chose to go the way of vintage floral. And when David Dhawan’s son Rohit got married in Goa, the destination determined the look of his wedding card: it was entirely inspired by the beaches of Goa.
YOU’VE GOT TO LOVE THE LOCATION
For Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, France proved to be their destination of choice. Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney tied the knot in Venice. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West chose Italy too. Sanjay Hinduja and Anu Mahtani opted for Udaipur, but added a serious dose of Western wonder by flying in Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Scherzinger to entertain their guests. Plenty of Hollywood stars have hosted the most glamorous weddings without moving out of their backyards; of course many have more acres on hand than we can count on our fingers. It matters little if you chose Italy, India or elsewhere — what is paramount is that you love the location and that it adds to the glamour of this momentous occasion.
FOOD IS LOVE AND DRINK DIVINE
Most of the world’s most glamorous Western weddings have a tiered wedding cake taking up much of the spotlight in the food and beverage department. While we love extravagant cakes and champagne towers, we have also been wowed by celebrity chefs offering sit-down dinners or bulging buffets. It’s always nice if the food ties in with the overall theme of the wedding, as it did when Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel got hitched in 2012. Hosted in Italy, their menu featured delectable local fare including artisan bread, lobster in turnip tops, mini Caprese salads and cheese platters, followed by a four-course meal including steak and sea bass. When Julia Roberts tied the knot on July 4, 2002, she chose to stick with a menu typical of an independence-day celebration. Burgers, hot dogs and corn on the cob aren’t wedding fare, but Julia and groom Danny Moder made it work! Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman (who married in 2012 and have split up since) hired a different chef to prepare each course for their food-centric wedding reception and when Matthew McConaughey married Camila Alves, they incorporated Brazilian food into their wedding menu to reflect Camila’s heritage.
OF COURSE IT’S ABOUT THE DRESS!
At the heart of most of the world’s most glamorous weddings is an iconic bride in an iconic outfit. Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen gown will long be remembered for its classic timelessness. Angelina Jolie may have opted for an equally high-end designer in Versace, but the A-list actress made her dress even more unique by incorporating a veil that featured sewed-on drawings by her children. At the other end of the spectrum, Keira Knightley wowed the world by wearing the most unexpected wedding gown: a short, strapless tulle dress that she paired with a Chanel jacket, ballet flats and Wayfarer sunglasses! Making your wedding ensemble memorable and matchless is the key. Audrey Hepburn, who could well have afforded the most expensive tiara in the world, wore a coronet of fresh roses in her hair on her wedding day. Kareena Kapoor played the part of quintessential ‘begum’ to her nawab beau Saif Ali Khan, even with her choice of wedding wear. Lara Dutta looked exquisite in a white wedding dress reminiscent of old Hollywood and Dia Mirza (who married Sahil Sangha in 2014) opted for a green ensemble to stand apart from the typical red-clad traditional bride.
DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN
Cocktails and dancing go hand in hand, though the big fat Indian wedding does this a bit differently. With Vanisha Mittal’s wedding amongst our list of the world’s most glamorous weddings, it serves as the perfect example. When Lakshmi Mittal’s darling daughter got married, it was filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan who taught the family the fine art of the thumka. Pop icon Kylie Minogue and a host of film faces were also signed on to perform as part of the Mittal wedding celebrations. Other Indian business tycoons have hired the likes of Shakira and Akon to entertain their guests, though this isn’t a mandated requirement when you are looking to host a wedding that can keep up with the most glamorous weddings the world has seen thus far. The most important thing is to kick back and enjoy the festivities, one way or another!
