10 tips from Amal and George Clooney’s wedding that will help you plan yours!
When the world’s most sought-after bachelor decides to finally tie the knot, it is bound to make headlines across the globe. Add to that a fairy-tale destination, an über stylish bride, a generous dose of genuine fun and a bevy of A-list guests — is it any wonder we are still talking about George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin’s wedding almost two years after the event?
Yes, the September 2014 Clooney wedding summarised the stuff that dreams are made of and not everyone can match up. Yet, there’s a lot to learn from the way Amal and George planned their wedding celebrations. LIVEINSTYLE.COM sifts through all the details to bring you a list of the top 10 tips from this star-studded extravaganza that will help you plan a spectacular wedding too.
A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN
We’re fans of things that match — and we’re not referring solely to the marital couple! Amal and George Clooney seem to appreciate things that match too and chose a theme for their wedding that tied in with all the elements of their celebration. ‘Classic and romantic with old-world charm’ was the brief, and everything from the invite to the décor to the terrific tiered cake followed in that mould. Copy the Clooneys and commit to a theme: chose a sentiment (like ‘romance’), a colour (let’s say ‘peach’) or even an era (we love everything vintage) and let all your other decisions be directed by that fundamental inspiration.
GO THE DISTANCE
It was romance and old-world charm that they wanted and no place in the world fit the brief better than Venice. While it offered up grand Italian architecture (those beautiful Baroque ceilings beneath which they exchanged vows) and exotic water taxi transport, it also meant more to Amal and George than that. It was in Italy in fact that the two first met, making the city of amore a much more meaningful choice for sentimental reasons. If budget constraints don’t bind you, take a tip from this fairy-tale wedding and opt for a destination do of your own.
HONOUR YOUR GUESTS
It may be your big day, but it won’t be quite as wonderful unless you are surrounded by your family and friends. Amal and George realised this too, making sure to inform their nearest and dearest about their plans well in advance. If you opt for a destination wedding like the lovely lawyer and her Hollywood star groom did, make sure you give guests enough notice to get their passports and visas organised. You may not have Matt Damon, John Krasinski or Emily Blunt on your guest list (as Amal and George did), but your guests will need to free up their schedules as well, so offer them the same respect. If possible, do what George did and opt for a weekend wedding — your invitees will appreciate not having to miss too many days at the office and it will make it easier for them to get away without being stressed about it.
GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
As much as we love a theme wedding, we love personalisation better. George and Amal had a monogram designed for their nuptials — an elegant symbol that featured their initials — and it appeared on everything from hat boxes and champagne bottles to the fleet of water taxis that their guests used to get to the wedding venue. It’s an easy idea to replicate and it really does add a special touch when it comes to detailing.
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS
In keeping with their classic theme, Amal and George opted for only white flowers to decorate their wedding venue. From the bridal bouquet and the blooms that lined the aisle to the sensational centrepieces, a variety of flowers were used — but while the arrangements featured roses, lilies, hydrangeas and orchids, every single blossom was white! With only green foliage to offset fresh white flowers, this is an idea worth aping for being so matchlessly timeless. However, if white isn’t quite to your liking, adopt the idea with a twist: choose a colour, any colour, but stick with that colour alone, adding only green foliage and gold or silver accents.
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW
Tradition tends to be a sticky area for most couples and here, again, Amal and George set a great example. They chose to follow some traditions and opted to break with others, making their choices unique and reflective of their personal beliefs. Amal and George opted not to have bridesmaids or a best man respectively, which is quite a departure from the typical way of doing things. They did, however, choose to spend the night before the wedding apart and hosted independent his and hers parties instead.
PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD
Not every bride and groom has the world watching their every move, but presentation matters nonetheless. Both Amal and George were well prepared in the wedding wardrobe department and made smart choices by prepping ahead for several outfits and appearances. While Amal’s Oscar de la Renta wedding gown was the pièce de résistance of her wedding wardrobe, the beautiful bride also packed statement outfits by Dolce & Gabbana (a black and white dress worn to welcome her guests), Alexander McQueen (a red-and-black gown worn to her bachelorette party), Giambattista Valli (for the morning after) and Stella McCartney (for the civil ceremony). For the wedding itself, George kept it classic in a bespoke Giorgio Armani tuxedo, but accessorised with a stunning Omega timepiece and customised cufflinks inscribed with ‘George’ in Arabic (they were a gift from Amal). The rest of his weekend wardrobe was equally dapper. Take a tip from this chic couple and plan multiple ensembles in advance. After all, between functions there’s a lot of meeting and greeting going on too, and you ought to be well dressed for everything!
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY
Great food and celebratory drinking certainly helps keep the mood upbeat. Amal and George’s nuptials featured sumptuous local fare and plenty of champagne, with George even creating his own cocktails (including one named after his mother Nina). Follow in Clooney’s footsteps and take the time to plan your food and beverages carefully. Enlist the help of tried and tested caterers. Opt to host smaller soirées in the run up to the wedding at restaurants you know and love, just as Clooney chose Ristorante da Ivo — where he is a regular — for his bachelor party.
Should you choose to have a destination wedding a la Amal and George, chances are you will be selective when it comes to the guest list. Or, you may choose to keep the wedding intimate even if you aren’t heading out of town. Either way, host a reception where you can invite as many people as you need to, including guests your parents or siblings may need to entertain. Upon their return to England, Amal and George hosted a post-wedding party at Danesfield House Hotel and Spa in Marlow, for guests who didn’t score an invitation to their Italian wedding.
George and Amal went to great lengths to ensure their wedding celebrations were personal, detailed and filled with love, and could not be faulted on any score. Get it right like the Clooneys by having an authentic, inclusive and joyful celebration. No doubt, yours too will be an affair to remember!
