Karaoke World Championships 2014

Our general idea of ‘karaoke’ is that it affords most amateur singers a platform to realise their ‘rockstar’ fantasies and sing unabashedly. However, much to our surprise, there’s a lot more to karaoke than just holding the mike and reading out lyrics from the screen.

A novel, revolutionary concept, Karaoke World Championships - a fierce singing competition between amateurs, was conceived by Finland in 2003. From seven countries at the start, today about 30 countries participate in this international karaoke competition. Some of the participant countries include Germany, Australia, Ireland, France, Japan, Poland, USA, UK, Lebanon, and India. Following the national trials conducted in each country, the winners compete internationally for the title of Male and Female Karaoke World Champion. Finland has been the host country for the finals for many years, with Ireland and Thailand also housing it once.

The 2013 Karaoke World Champions hail from Japan, New Zealand, and Russia (Male; in serial order) and Spain, Finland, and USA (females; in serial order). Sadly though, despite great potential, India has never made it to the top in this contest. The national trials will be split into four levels: Venue Trials, Venue Trial Finale, Zonal Finale, and Indian Finale. Furthermore, there will be segregation in terms of the zones where the Zonal Finals will be held: Delhi (North), Hyderabad (South), Kolkata (East), and Mumbai (West). Apart from these solo performances, this competition celebrates the spirit of friendship by allowing group performances as well. After having been judged by revered Karaoke Judges or KJs, the top 24 zonal finalists compete against each other to win the title of India's Karaoke World Champion 2014.

This year the Grand Finale will be held at Stockholm, Sweden, in the Solidaritet Arena from 13th to 15th of November, 2014. KWC is truly an event that blurs racial, religious, and national boundaries and brings together singers from all over the globe.
