How Do Karaoke Machines Score your Singing?
One too many times, terrible singers have come away with the notion that they sound like Frank Sinatra or Whitney Houston thanks to the dreaded karaoke score. The fact of the matter is that these machines are as good judges of singing as Kim Kardashian is of long-term relationships.
As any educated guess will tell you, karaoke machines are trained to recognize the amplitude and patter of the input voice, not the quality of singing. To gain a high score, you just have to sing at the right moment, i.e., when the lyrics on the screen pop-up. As most of us may notice in our alcohol-induced stupor, simply yelling into the microphone at the right moments is enough to score a perfect 100—you don’t even need to sing the right words.
So the next time some of your friend fight over who’s the better singer, yell like a caveman during Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go on” and enjoy the flabbergasted looks on their faces as you rock out to a perfect score.
