The Pepsi IPL has been around a while, 7 years to be precise. It’s seen its share of ups and downs and yet has managed to keep the audiences interested and wanting more! As the seventh season of the IPL picks up momentum, we take a look at some of the modifications, innovations and all things new, in IPL 2014.
The Official IPL App
Sure, you’ve always had access to scores and news on your smartphone through websites or other cricket apps. But the official IPL app takes your experience and immersion to the next level with fixture lists, live scoreboards, results, points table, latest news, and statistics for teams and players at your fingertips. This app is available on Android, iPhone and Windows phones. Get it now!
Live mobile streaming
If simply being up-to-date with the scores is not enough for you, and you just have to watch your favourite team play, starsports.com now offers live streaming of all the IPL matches. You’ll never miss another moment of the action, whether you’re on the move, there’s a power cut, or someone breaks your TV.
Umpire view cam
A nifty little innovation introduced for the first time this year, cameras mounted on the umpire’s caps give a unique perspective during match telecasts. It’s interesting to see LBW appeals from this point of view, especially when he shakes his head to indicate not out.
Fantasy leagues have been around for a while. The official IPL Fantasy League which debuted last year, had over 5 lakh registrations and created a huge buzz on social media. This year, loads of new features have been introduced - from playing in 'Stealth mode' to 'Scheduled Substitutions' and 'Facebook Leagues' which allows you to form your own league amongst your Facebook friends. Furthermore, the Fantasy League is better optimised for mobile this year.
IPL is collaborating with Twitter this year to bring the fans a more immersive real-time interactive experience. From the Twitter IPL Calendar to IPL Pulse - which depicts the IPL story in data visualizations, to the IPL handle takeover by players and commentators to a live tweeting SpiderCam, the IPL experience will be completely integrated online, on-ground and on-air.
Brand new venues
While we talk about what’s new this IPL season, how can we leave out the brand new venues? IPL touches new shores with 3 stadiums in a brand new country - the UAE. Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi get their first taste of IPL fever. Meanwhile, back home, Ranchi, Cuttack and Ahmedabad are hosting their first IPL matches this year.
During the last six years, IPL has turned into what is arguably the most watched cricketing event around, and continued innovations this year promise to take interactivity and fan interest to a whole new level.
