With his two new Smoke House Delis opening just a couple of weeks apart at Bandra and Bandra-Kurla, restaurateur Riyaaz Amlani is aiming to grab a hefty slice of the ever-growing dining out market in Mumbai.
It was strange nostalgia sitting in what once used to be our regular haunt Yellow Tree. But one has to admit that Smoke House Deli at Bandra is way cosier, with interiors that lull you to lounge here for hours on end, sipping mandarin mojitos, chatting with friends. The restaurant exudes an old-world charm with eclectic hand-drawn illustrations on the walls, old photographs under the glass surface of the table and quaint printed lampshades casting a mellow light from above.
The menu boasts of a multitude of sections and dishes, but the food didn’t live up to our expectations. With some of the ingredients missing from the kitchen, we had to skip a few of the dishes. The ones that stood out were the melt-in-the-mouth starter of Devilled Tenderloin Bites and the main course of Honey Orange Glazed Grilled Pork Chops. The rest were too bland—skip the house spiced smoked chicken and tenderloin steak. The desserts of vanilla crème brûlée and flourless chocolate fudge saved the day.
But it doesn’t change our verdict: head here only for pre-dinner drinks or post dinner for the considerable variety of coffees and teas.
