Maritime by San Lorenzo, Mumbai

The iconic London restaurant San Lorenzo owned by Lorenzo Berni, which pays homage to hearty, rustic Italian cuisine, opened its doors at the Taj Lands End in Bandra, Mumbai. It is the brand’s first international venture in 50 years.

The entrance seems clandestine, the door blending seamlessly with the surroundings, hiding away a treasure trove of scrumptious Italian delicacies. Maritime by San Lorenzo has a wine menu that features 64 Italian labels and a food menu that’s just two pages long—nothing to be disappointed about, au contraire it is a baffling task selecting from a list where you want to order almost every dish.

Being unabashed carnivores, we started with the Carpaccio di Manzo, a thinly sliced angus tenderloin that practically melts on the tongue. Next was the chef’s recommendation of Cotechino con Lenticchie (sliced Italian pork sausage with stewed lentils and creamed potatoes), a dish he claimed was prepared only during festivals in Italy and one that was interestingly delicious. But the highlight of our meal was the Risotto Gamberi e Zucchini that will make you want to forget your manners and lick the bowl clean.

“Our tiramisu is the best in the country,” proclaimed the chef proudly, leaving us with the luscious dessert, a coffee lover’s delight that exuded strong flavours of espresso and, yes, was absolutely divine.

Address: Taj Lands End, Band Stand, Bandra West, Mumbai – 400 050.
