High on colour with a crisp light ambience, plenty of origami and guppy fish toys on the walls, Guppy By Ai is restaurateur AD Singh’s latest Japanese offering to the Capital’s gourmands. The man behind the super-successful Olive chain of eateries has re-launched his Ai restaurant. Guppy By Ai has a more relaxed, fun ambience, but what stands out is the fabulous Japanese food, concocted using authentic ingredients. For instance, the Chilli Lime dressed Agedashi Tofu is exactly what it promised to be—crisp on the outside and silky within.
While waiting for the main course of Guppy Signature Black Cod (cooked with miso and served with a hot sauce), we dined on the flavoursome Chirashi Seafood Salad (an assortment of pickled prawn, tuna, salmon, crab and baby greens in a goma-ae dressing). The cod was a bit too sweet for our liking, but we were contented by its buttery texture. What we’d definitely recommend is the Karashi Chicken and Bacon (chicken leg in bacon stew, cooked slowly with karashi mustard sauce). Pair this with wok-tossed sticky rice and vegetables with garlic soy and you’ll be wiping your plate clean.
We ended our meal with the warm cinnamon-flavoured carrot cake. Artfully topped with mascarpone frosting and a miniature carrot toffee, this is one dessert you’ll remember for a long, long time.
