Gear up for a day of love - Valentine's Day Gift Ideas
At around this point next week, St. Valentine will force you to take some time off to pamper your ladylove. Perhaps Valentine’s Day is your least favourite celebration because you are far too masculine to be that mushy. On the other hand, you may well love the excuse for some uninhibited romance. Whatever your stand on the year’s biggest celebration of love, be prepared to mark February 14 — because, if you don’t, your lovely lady may well hold it against you all year long!
A gift is worth a thousand words:
This is one thing you don’t want to get wrong and so we’re stepping in to help out. Before we start with the dos, we’re making the don’ts very clear. Don’t buy her cooking pots and cleaning tools, unless you want to be called a “tool” for the next few months. Don’t gift her cash, unless she has specifically asked for it — you don’t want her to think that you just can’t be bothered with the effort that goes into buying a gift. Don’t offer her an IOU; start planning now to ensure you do have something special in hand on the day. Now, on to our recommendations. First, diamonds. No girl can ever have enough (she can never have too many shoes either, but those are harder to buy without a trial and won’t be appreciated as much). Set up a spa date — that could be fun for both of you. You could also opt for the DIY version: we’re thinking edible chocolate body paint and some lush loot from L’Occitane. You could keep it simple and just buy her a nice new watch: whether you pick Rolex or Swatch really depends on what would work for your girl. Another option is to gift her lingerie (it’s okay if it is impractical and she can never wear it to work). If you’re lucky, she might model it for you… could you ask for a better return present? From designer handbags to the latest iPhone, there are 50 other great gifts out there, just waiting to be bought. Be smart about it. Start listening to any hints she may be dropping this week about what she wants. If you have no indication of what that could be, just play it safe with one of our top picks.
Give a priceless gift:
If you’re a bit strapped for cash this month — or you’ve already given her all the great things money can buy — gear up to give her a ‘priceless’ gift. A homemade dinner tops our list but, to state the obvious, it won’t work if you ask your mum to cook. With a week to practice, pick a few easy recipes today and get going. Try Jamie Oliver for continental meals that are actually achievable, no matter how much of a disaster you usually are in the kitchen. On the day, set up a nice table for two (crockery that matches and all the right cutlery), put a nice bottle of wine in the chiller and turn off your phone for some uninterrupted lovin’! Even if your meal doesn’t wow her taste buds, your effort certainly will.

Celebrate for more than a day:
If time isn’t an issue and all you need is an excuse, book a holiday for two and pick an exotic destination. We’d recommend Atlantis, The Palm, in Dubai where ‘intimate dinners, luxurious spa treatments and value-packed room packages’ are promised at around this time of the year. On offer at the moment is a ‘Romantic Getaway’ that tempts with a decadent combination of a dozen classic ruby red roses, a sunset bathing ritual, strawberries dipped in chocolate and a romantic turndown with a sprinkle of rose petals — starting at Rs. 35,000 for the package. There is champagne on offer at the spa and their stunning Royal Spa Suite provides a lavish setting for cosy couples: complete with a lounge area which flows into beautifully appointed treatment rooms, a private terrace and an oval jetted pedestal tub. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?
