The best time of the year to run away to the mountains is during summers. The hills and the mountains can bring much required respite from the scorching heat we city dwellers face. Before you take off, make sure you are well prepared though. Nothing can be as difficult as finding yourself in the midst of dense woods, only to realize you are missing a flash light or not wearing the right kind of shoes or you forgot to pack your very essential rain jacket. To help ease the process, the checklist below will ensure you are packing all your essentials while being as sartorial as a hiker can be.

Backpack: This is definitely the most important element. Make sure your back pack complements your height; else the weight can cause some serious spine troubles. Next would be to choose a light weight backpack in darker colors. While at it, pick up a backpack with a cover, it will be the easiest way to save it from getting dirty and will save your backpack’s face on a rainy day.

Clothes: Carry a couple of synthetic T-shirts and cotton vests to be worn inside. Team this with your fitted tracks or with synthetic knee length shorts. Layer this with a light rain jacket or a windbreaker. Ensure they have abundant pockets so you have room for wallets, glasses and other smaller items. If the idea is to camp in the woods, do throw in a wool sweater, pack gaiters and a fleece jacket will be a good idea as well.

Shoes: Don’t substitute your hiking boots with your trainers or runners. For this will be repented when you twist an ankle or while climbing a slippery surface. Research the terrain of your hike ground. If it is rocky, slushy or infested, depending on this invest in the right pair of hiking boots. Do pack abundant pairs of socks, a pair of flip flops for when you halt and a pair of sneakers for when you are not hiking.

Accessories: Sunglasses and hats must be packed and this goes without saying, carry at least two of each. You should replace your regular watch with a nice pair of water proof watch. Do not overlook that bottle of moisturizer, sunscreen, a mild shampoo, deodorant and lastly throw in activated charcoal soap for cleaning your pores after a long day of walking and sweating.

Miscellaneous: These are probably the most coveted items while hiking as they make life much easier in any adverse conditions. Pack torch lights, batteries, head lights, a thin sleeping bag, medicines a first kit and antiseptics, matches and loads of water to keep you hydrated. A bar of dark chocolate, a bag of mixed dry nuts and energy bars are a must on such trips as they are instant energizers.
