Why Priyanka Chopra’s latest achievement is making people angry...

The latest in her long line of achievements and accolades out West is news that Priyanka Chopra has been picked to be part of The #WhatIsSexy List for 2017 — courtesy the good folks at Victoria’s Secret. PC was being praised all weekend for making it to the premium lingerie company’s annual list for owning the ‘Sexiest Red Carpet Look’ of 2017. Kudos came in with the same enthusiasm as when, only a few days ago, headlines announced our local lovely would be one of the jury members at the Tribeca Film Festival this year (let’s stop and think about that for a second).

While some cheered, others shot down the Victoria’s Secret list for picking winners who are “overwhelmingly slim, white women.” Obviously PC is not white, hence neither the criticism nor anger is being directed at her specifically, but the row is heating up around her nonetheless. With Taylor Swift, Margot Robbie, Mandy Moore, Lady GaGa and Vanessa Hudgens topping this list in other categories, PC may be pleased to make the cut. But here’s the question: while some folks dig up the diversity discussion, should we really expect more from a Victoria’s Secret list? “Do better, Victoria’s Secret,” says one acclaimed international publication and we think, sure, they could do better. But then again, sexy is subjective — so why get flustered by anyone else’s opinion on #WhatIsSexy? Perhaps the best response is to refuse to be ruffled by this ruckus.
