Last year, Forbes magazine named Melissa McCarthy the third highest-paid actress in the world for 2015. Money aside, McCarthy also has an Emmy win, an Oscar nomination and numerous other awards as testament to her success. All things considered, you may be surprised to hear Melissa almost quit acting because getting her big break proved to be so hard!

“Acting wasn’t working out,” McCarthy confesses. “I was getting rejection after rejection, I wasn’t even getting auditions — I couldn’t get a job to save my life. I always said if I don’t get anything substantial by the time I’m 30, I’m done. And a week before I turned 30, I got Gilmore Girls. Things weren’t ‘bad’ but I had been working two jobs and I got to a point where I thought, ‘Why am I doing this? Why am I beating myself up?’ Acting never would have left my life, I would’ve acted in some way,” says the 45-year-old star, who considers herself “so fortunate” that acting is now her occupation.

So what does it take to turn a passion into a paycheck? Going by McCarthy’s experience, following your heart tops the list. Though she studied textiles at the Southern Illinois University and was originally was interested in a career in fashion, Melissa’s deep desire to act kept the dream alive. With perseverance, endurance and hard work to fuel your dreams, McCarthy believes anyone can turn a passion into a paycheck. She has certainly managed it!
