Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Shows That Friendship Triumphs Over Everything

“Pyaar main junoon hai, dosti main sukoon hai.”

This beautiful dialogue from the recently released Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) encapsulates the core essence of the film, which is not love but friendship.

Among the many platitudes, the one emotion that truly stands out in ADHM is that of a true heartfelt #asliyaari between Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) and Alizeh (Anushka Sharma).

Director Karan Johar builds a vibrant atmosphere for these two amigos to grow from mere acquaintances to best friends and you just can’t help but fall for their perky and cheerful bond.

Ayan and Alizeh are perfect friends who will stand by each other, not shy away from being honest with each other and have loads and loads of fun together. Be it the peppy energy of the ‘Breakup song’, their mad trip to Paris, their constant delightful filmy banter, and the profound conversation by the fireplace when Alizeh says the above mentioned dialogue… their friendship shines through every frame, giving you some major friendship goals.

But like in any relationship a conflict stems up in their frothy camaraderie too.

After all, friendship is a tricky business, especially if one of the parties involved have amorous feelings for you. However, what truly makes this equation one of its kinds is when you don’t let your romantic feelings take control and this very painful struggle is what the director attempts to bring to the screen and even succeeds.

Some of the scenes are so well-crafted that your heart goes out to the two leads of the film. Ranbir Kapoor’s character is caught up between his feelings for Alizeh and at the same time wanting to keep their friendship alive. While Anushka is dealing with her own turmoil of not being able to love her best friend the way he wants her to.

Of course, it’s not easy but if your #asliyaari is true, you don’t let love destroy that bond of friendship. Friendship triumphs over everything else and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is one of those rare films that brilliantly captures the joy and angst of friendship.

Through heartbreak and hatred, good times and bad, Ayan and Alizeh show us that friendship really can last forever.
