The model-turned-actor has turned club promoter in the recent past, as the brains behind the pop-up club ‘The Playground’ which opens its doors every once in a while at the Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai. Articulate and energetic, we caught up with Morea on the sidelines of INCA, where he was on a panel about pop-up clubs and their appeal for both promoters and revellers. His initial fame notwithstanding, Morea seemed happiest to blend into crowd, using his time there to network with familiar faces and oblige the odd fan. Over a cup of coffee, he shared his thoughts on the state of nightlife in India today.
What is your idea of a great night out?
My idea of a great night out is everyone coming and having fun. Curating a great experience for people. Where, they come, they have fun, they see good people, they indulge in good food, good alcohol, listen to good music. Basically the idea is to come out and have fun. As a promoter, as a business owner, if I can capture their wallet while they’re having fun, it’s a great night. As a consumer, I just want to go have a laugh, meet friends, dance, listen to good music and have a drink. It’s pretty simple.
Fair enough. What do you think of initiatives like INCA?
I think the whole initiative is good. Fact being, we need to support the industry, which creates experiences and entertainment for people. We need to promote it. Especially with all the laws, sort of restricting what we do. We need to open it up and show people that, ‘Hey, its fun’. The youth want to go out and have fun. We’re giving them an opportunity and a way to go out and have fun. It’s not bad, it’s fun.
What are your favourite places to party in India?
Nightclub would be Playground, it’s a really cool pop-up club which happens at the Four Seasons. Elbow Room, which is a bar in Bandra. And ummm, what are the other places? Ya, just one or two other places I’d rather go to, and let loose.
When out, what is your favourite kind of drink to have?
If I feel like having a drink in terms of alcohol, I’ll probably have vodka or a glass of wine. It depends on the mood ya, if I’m at a club it’s probably a vodka with some lemon juice. If it’s a dinner, I’ll probably have a glass of wine, or if it’s a day when I’m not drinking, (then) it’s fresh lime soda.
Which city in India do you think has the best nightlife?
Mumbai for sure is buzzing. It's cosmopolitan; it's great with good people, super crowd. I grew up in Bangalore and Bangalore at one point was I feel the best in terms of pubs - the way people went to and all. It was excellent and had no restrictions on time like unfortunately there is now. So Bangalore at one point and now, I think Mumbai’s still got a great vibe.
