Having dished out £3.3 million on a six-bedroom mansion in Oxfordshire last year, we hear comedian Russell Brand has earmarked a further £1 million towards renovating this country retreat (above). The sums involved are clearly no laughing matter, but the situation itself has turned into a bit of a joke.
For those who came in late, Russell has consistently pushed his image as an anti-capitalist and even authored a tome titled ‘Revolution’ in 2014, attacking tax-dodging firms and rallying against economic disparity. It’s a hard story to sell while he’s buying up prime real estate across the globe and lounging around “taking pictures of swans” at his postcard-worthy, six-bed, riverside retreat in Henley-on-Thames.
With a new swimming pool and top-of-the-line cinema room slated to be part of Russell’s revamped retreat, the irony isn’t lost on anyone — least of all Brand’s outspoken buddy Noel Gallagher. “Revolutionary Russell is playing PS4,” Gallagher told members of the Press not too long ago, adding that he suggested Brand’s next book be titled ‘The Revolution That Never Took Place’. This once, it seems, the joke is on the joker!
