Indian comedy shows on Amazon, Hotstar and Netflix that will make you ROFL

Check out these Amazon shows, Hotstar shows, and Netflix shows for the best comedy shows and stand-up comedy in India

It’s raining stand-up comedy in India right now. The nascent scene got a big boost in recent times with the arrival of streaming sites like Amazon, Hotstar and Netflix.  The rapidly declining price of both broadband and mobile devices has brought these shows within reach of most people in cities across the country. Here, LIS lists some of the best comedy shows you should check out on the streaming sites.

Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai 2 (Hotstar)

Possibly the most popular comedy show in India currently, Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai achieved something that fans couldn’t do even with F.R.I.E.N.D.S. – bring it back because of popular demand. Indians apparently can’t seem to get enough of the crazy antics of Maya, Indravadan, Sahil, Monisha and Rosesh. This season, Rosesh has an enduring love interest – much to Maya’s chagrin – and this crazy party of five has taken it up a notch. The comedy is a wonderful combination of sarcasm, dry humour and slapstick, and the writing is as good as in season one.

Madrasi Da (Amazon)

Madrasi Da is a standup special that breaks down the typical stereotypes about South India and Chennai in particular. Of course, it cheekily introduces new ones as well. Performed by Aravind SA, one of the most popular names in the standup comedy in India, the show is a laugh riot, especially in taking down some of the many prejudices and biases that some Indians have harboured against the people of the southern states for a long time. The show had a highly successful 18-month tour across the world. It is one of the most viewed Amazon shows right now. Aravind SA is quite engaging to watch, with his performances being high on energy and activity.

Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai (Netflix)

One of the funniest Netflix shows in India right now, Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai is a comedy of errors about two men in unhappy marriages trying hard to impress each other’s wives. Set in Kanpur, the story revolves around two couples who are neighbours and focuses on the evolving definitions of marriage in modern India. Manmohan Tiwari is a prolific businessman who is married to a simpleton, Angoori. While their neighbour, Vibhuti Narayan Mishra, is an unsuccessful and unemployed insurance policy agent who grudgingly spends his days as a house husband. Anita, his wife, a former beauty queen is a headstrong and smart woman who flaunts her modernity. As the woman who brings home the bacon, the switched roles in this household lends itself to some very acerbic comedy. Slowly, the men start devising schemes to impress each other's wives, pull each other down, and often shoot themselves in the foot – leading to hilarious situational comedy.

On Air with AIB (Hotstar)

The Mumbai-based comedy group, All India Bakchod, hit big time on the social media platforms about two years ago with their parody shows on Indian politics and political TV.  Particularly noteworthy is their massive following among the youth. So, it was only a matter of time when they would be approached by TV channels and streaming sites. It is not surprising then that  On Air with AIB on Hotstar has quickly risen to the top of the charts in the comedy sweepstakes. Tanmay, Khamba, Ashish and Rohan make everyone laugh their heart out with their quirky – and comic – take on politics, relationships, teenagers, and technology.

Son of Abish (Amazon)

Son Of Abish is a chat show which switches from standup to musical comedy, improv sketches, and mixes it all up in a hilarious monthly news roundup segment. The highlight of the show is the funny celebrity guest interviews and performances, during which they share hilarious anecdotes and commentary, making this one of the most wholesome Amazon shows on comedy and pop culture in India.

Aditi Mittal: Things They Wouldn’t Let Me Say (Netflix)

One of India’s favourite standup comics, Aditi Mittal, has created an excellent comedy special on Netflix in which she discusses possibly everything under the sun – especially stuff they don’t like Indian women to talk about. Her stand-up routine delves into her life as a single woman and the kind of pressure that the patriarchal Indian society imposes on women like her. These include the way they dress, talk, walk, attitude to relationships, etc. No wonder it is among the hottest shows on Netflix currently. Mittal, in fact, created quite a buzz with a frank round table discussion with Anupama Chopra before the show came out, discussing the problems of misogyny and misrepresentation in Indian comedy. She spoke about how it is a boy’s club and barely creates any opportunity for funny women.
