Sydney on a platter
After pretty much eating through an entire week in Sydney (lucky me!) I am convinced that no one does food quite like this Sydney. Thanks to the city’s multicultural roots, the variety of food options available is tremendous. Here’s a round-up of our favourite restaurants in Sydney and what we loved so much about them.
Chiswick: Best known as the culinary masterpiece of celebrity Chef Matt Moran, Chiswick is truly a lovely restaurant. Nestled in the Woollahra neighborhood of Sydney, the restaurant concentrates on fresh, local produce. Flooded in natural light with views of the restaurant’s beautiful vegetable garden, Chiswick has a lively yet leisurely feel.
Must try: The wood roasted Moran family lamb (served with carrots, pumpkin, yoghurt and mint) is a speciality of Chiswick, cooked to perfection and served with a flourish. For dessert, don’t miss out on the delicious Pavlova—an Australian favourite.
Opera Kitchen: A meal at the glorious Opera Kitchen is a rite of passage for most visitors to the city, and a way of life for the locals. Nestled at the foot of the Opera House with stunning views of the bay and Harbour Bridge, the Opera Kitchen is a must-visit—especially at sunset (the seagulls love this place too!)
Must try: The tasting plate (mini burgers, oysters, dumplings and seafood salad) is perfect to get a nibble of the Opera House’s extensive menu. Wash it down with some local ale (Coopers).
Jonahs: Spectacularly located at the edge of a cliff, Jonah’s offers stunning views of a sweeping beach and the blue Pacific Ocean with not a person in sight. How perfect is that? The food presentation is lovely—so much so that you will spend your meal torn between looking at the view and your plate.
Must try: The menu specializes in fresh sea food preparations. The pan seared Barramundi and North Atlantic scallops are a favourite with the diners. Vegetarian can opt for the delicate wild mushroom tortellini. The almond panna cotta with raspberry sorbet gives an absolutely divine climax to the meal.
Billy Kwong: MasterChef Australia enthusiasts will be familiar with Chef Kylie Kwong. Restaurant Billy Kwong, located in Sydney’s Surrey Hills, is a very interesting culinary experience. Inspired by the idea of recreating a traditional Chinese eating house, Billy Kwong is intimate and cozy.
Must try: All of Billy Kwong’s dishes follow the philoshy of sing the freshest ingredients, sustainability, and local sourcing wherever possible. Some of the restaurants signature dishes include the stir-fried mussels with black bean and chilli, steamed fish fillets and the home-style fried eggs with oyster sauce.
